The Inner Light

Quakerism (Religious Society of Friends)

The foundational teaching of Quakerism is that there is that of God in everyone. This divine presence is called the Inner Light, the Inward Light, or the Light of Christ. Because the Light dwells in all people equally, Quakers historically opposed slavery, refused to participate in war, and recognized the spiritual equality of men and women from their beginning in the 17th century.

“Walk cheerfully over the world, answering that of God in everyone.”

George Fox, 1656

“There is a principle which is pure, placed in the human mind, which in different places and ages hath had different names. It is, however, pure and proceeds from God. It is deep and inward, confined to no forms of religion nor excluded from any.”

John Woolman, 1746

“The Light is not merely a metaphor; it is the direct, unmediated experience of the Divine in the silence of the waiting heart.”

Jah Within

Rastafari

An Afrocentric spiritual movement that emerged in Jamaica in the 1930s. Rastafari teaches that God (Jah) is not a distant deity in the sky, but a living presence within every human being. This concept is expressed in the phrase 'I and I', which replaces 'you and I' to signify that the same divine spirit unites all people. It is a spirituality of liberation, love, and resistance to oppression.

“I and I means that God is in all men. The bond of Ras Tafari is the bond of God, of man.”

Rastafari Teaching

“One love, one heart, one destiny. Let us get together and feel all right.”

Bob Marley

“The temple of Jah is the human body. We do not need a building of stone to find the Most High, for the Most High dwells within the temple of flesh.”

Tawûsê Melek

Yazidism

An ancient, monotheistic religion practiced primarily by Kurds in northern Iraq. Yazidis believe God created the world and entrusted it to seven Holy Beings, the greatest of whom is Tawûsê Melek, the Peacock Angel. Often misunderstood and persecuted, Yazidism is a peaceful faith that reveres the sun as the visible emanation of God's light and teaches that good and evil exist within the human heart, not as external cosmic forces.

“God is one, and His light shines through the Peacock Angel, who brings color and beauty to the world.”

Yazidi Oral Tradition

“We pray facing the sun, for the sun is the source of life and the visible symbol of the Creator's eternal light.”

Yazidi Prayer Custom

“There is no external force of evil. The choice between light and darkness lies entirely within the human heart.”

The World of Light

Mandaeism

The last surviving continuous Gnostic religion, originating in the Middle East. Mandaeans revere John the Baptist as their greatest teacher. Their cosmology is strictly dualistic, divided between the World of Light (Alma d Nhira) and the World of Darkness. They practice frequent baptism in flowing living water (yardna) to purify the soul and reconnect it with the Great Life, the supreme being of light.

“In the name of the Great Life, healing and purity are yours. The Light is established, the Darkness is vanquished.”

Mandaean Baptismal Prayer

“I am a mana (soul) of the Great Life. I came from the World of Light, from the place of radiance I was transplanted.”

Ginza Rabba (The Great Treasure)

“Let the living water wash away the darkness, that the soul may ascend unhindered to the realms of light.”

The Wiccan Rede

Wicca / Neo-Paganism

A modern earth based spiritual tradition that honors the divine in nature, often conceptualized as a Goddess and a God. Wicca emphasizes personal responsibility, reverence for the cycles of the earth, and the ethical principle of the Wiccan Rede. It teaches that all living things are sacred and interconnected in the web of life.

“Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill: An it harm none, do what ye will.”

The Wiccan Rede

“Listen to the words of the Great Mother, who of old was also called Artemis, Astarte, Dione, Melusine, Aphrodite, Cerridwen, Diana, Arianrhod, Bride, and by many other names: Whenever ye have need of anything, once in the month, and better it be when the moon is full, then shall ye assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of Me.”

Charge of the Goddess (Doreen Valiente)

“We are of the earth, and the earth is of us. The divine is not above us in the sky, but beneath our feet and within our own hearts.”

The Living World

Animism

The oldest and most universal spiritual framework of humanity. Animism is the understanding that all things, animals, plants, rocks, rivers, weather systems, and human handiwork, are animated and alive. It teaches that humans are not separate from or superior to nature, but are part of a vast community of living persons, only some of whom are human.

“The trees are our lungs, the rivers our blood, the wind our breath. What we do to the earth, we do to ourselves.”

Indigenous Animist Wisdom

“Everything is alive. Everything has a spirit. When you walk through the forest, you are walking through a congregation of elders.”

Animist Teaching

“We do not own the land; the land owns us. We are merely its caretakers for the generations yet unborn.”
